Overview

Foothills Watershed is more than just a restaurant—it’s an immersive outdoor experience nestled at 655 Catawba River Rd in Old Fort, North Carolina. This unique spot blends the rugged charm of the foothills with a vibrant food scene inspired by authentic Mexican flavors and mountain-inspired fare. Whether you’re coming for a quick bite or a day by the river, Foothills Watershed delivers a genuine connection to nature and community alongside bold, well-crafted dishes.

The menu centers around versatile proteins like smoky barbacoa, rich chorizo, tender carnitas, and smoked chicken, offering options for meat lovers and vegetarians alike. Their signature preparations shine in tacos, burritos, and platos, each thoughtfully paired with seasonal sides like yuca frita, sweet plantains, rice, and beans. Dishes such as the Chorizo Smash Burger and Corn Quesadilla offer approachable twists on classic flavors, while the Tostada grabs attention with its grilled marinated vegetables and salsa negra.

One of the standout features guests often mention is the yucca fries—offering a crunchy, satisfying alternative to traditional fries that pair beautifully with housemade sauces. These small touches show the care put into every detail, elevating simple comfort food into something memorable.

Beyond the food, Foothills Watershed crafts an inviting atmosphere that complements its foothill setting. With areas to relax by the river, sandy play spaces for children, and even a pump track and bike trails, it’s clear this is a destination for families, outdoor enthusiasts, and locals looking for a “third place” to unwind. The low-key, unpretentious vibe is furthered by welcoming staff and a BYOB policy that encourages visitors to bring their favorite drinks—though a brewery is in the works to round out the experience.

While some visitors note the absence of a kids’ menu and alcohol options currently, the feeling of community and connection is strong. The setting invites all—from solo explorers seeking quiet moments beside the water to families craving outdoor fun and flavorful food in one spot. Foothills Watershed isn’t just a meal stop; it’s a living, breathing space that celebrates local culture, adventure, and simple pleasures in a way that truly resonates with its mountain surroundings.

If you find yourself in the Old Fort area, craving fresh, thoughtfully prepared food alongside an authentic outdoor retreat, Foothills Watershed should be on your list. The blend of vibrant Mexican-inspired dishes, relaxed atmosphere, and stunning natural backdrop make it a rare find—a place where the taste of the foothills meets the spirit of community.

Food was good. Meat was prepaid well. Had a burrito and tacos. Yucca fries were our favorite part. Ketchup and salt made yucca fries so dang good. Some people may not love the sauces, some will adore them. Great setting. So happy to have another cool place in Old Fort. Thanks

I had an awesome time at the watershed! I’m not sporty spice so I wasn’t sure what to expect considering the emphasis on the bike trails and pump track they have but I was pleasantly surprised to feel right at home in the foothills of the mountains. The food was incredible, so incredible I ordered two meals because I wanted to try everything lol I’d make a recommendation but it was all so good. You can pay $5 to hang out down by the river which is the perfect hangout spot. There’s a pond to cool off in and they have chairs available or you can bring your own. I felt really cozy and at home. The staff was all super helpful and seemed to be excited to be a part of such a cool project. This is definitely a one of a kind spot. If you’re looking for a “third place” this is it. I can’t wait to see what else they add on, I hear they’re starting a brewery soon and right now it’s BYOB. This is a great spot to bring your family or to hang out alone if you want to feel safe outdoors outside of the city.

Pretty neat place, we just went and had some food and a coke (they don’t have beer yet). Wife thought the chicken burrito was just okay but I thought the chorizo burger was amazing! Looks really cool if you mountain bike and we would have went down to the water and let the dog play but a storm came through. Could use some more detailed signs on how to exit.

The coolest spot! We passed by on our way out to Catawba Falls and ended up stopping to hang by the river - so glad we did! There are so many cool little hang out areas by the river, sand pits for the kids, picnic tables, food, trails, a pump track, and plenty of shade! You can pay $5 for a day pass. Might be our new favorite spot! Highly recommend!

Stopped by lunchtime mid-week after a nearby hike. There’s no alcohol or kids menu yet, which was a bit of a bummer. But the servers were very kind and friendly to our kids. The tacos were delicious and very filling. The salsas with the tacos were fantastic. We stayed and played ping pong. The place was very empty since we were there during the workday, but I would imagine it’s a very fun place for dinner and weekends.

One of the most unique places I have ever experienced. My family and I spent a whole day playing in the river followed by an amazing lunch from their taco truck. Plenty of activities. wonderful and caring staff. Delicious food. We will certainly come back next weekend

Watershed is awesome! The taco truck delivered a solid lunch that was a fresh change of pace from fried food. The bike trails are a punchy and fast system setting up plenty of session options. The pump tracks are loads of fun for little bikers. The water (river and pond) is the main event and gave us a full afternoon of entertainment. Looking for an easily accessible location with plenty of room for outdoor play (that will tire your kids out), you’ve found it at Foothills Watershed!
